Less Meh, More Momentum: How to Tackle Workplace Boredom

July is National Anti-Boredom Month—the perfect excuse to shake up routines, rethink tired processes, and identify what might be slowing your momentum. In PR, things tend to move fast, so boredom may not always look like doing nothing. Sometimes, it shows up as feeling stuck, uninspired, or too busy to think creatively. This month is a great reminder to take a pause, see what’s working, and find fresh ways to re-energize your work and mindset.
Here are a few ways to beat boredom, this month or any time!
1. Turn on a new podcast or webinar: Block some time for yourself to attend a podcast or webinar, either focused on PR or maybe the industry your company or client is associated with. What are the trends or topics of conversations calling out here, and how can you translate into the work you’re currently doing? Subscriptions to e-newsletters or Substacks can help with this, too!
2. Research an approach you’ve never tried before: Take a second to reflect on a piece of work you recently executed; maybe it was an influencer partnership on Instagram or a byline coordinated with a media outlet. What worked about this, or what didn’t? From those results, research what might fit that missing piece and present it as a new opportunity for discussion amongst your team.
3. Network or join a new organization: Join a professional organization like Greater Cleveland PRSA to connect with local peers and gain fresh perspectives. Stepping outside your day-to-day work can spark new ideas, introduce different approaches, and help you discover media outlets that may be a strong fit for your company or client.
