During Women's History Month, we honor Betsy Plank, a visionary leader who revolutionized the public relations field. Often called the "First Lady of Public Relations," her career exemplified breaking barriers, fostering education, and inspiring professionals worldwide.
A Groundbreaking Career
Born in 1924 in Alabama, Betsy’s journey into public relations began after graduating with a degree in history and English literature. She ventured into broadcasting before discovering her true passion for PR, where she quickly rose to prominence. Among her many achievements, she became the first woman to lead a corporate PR team at Illinois Bell and the first female president of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). She also co-founded the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), cementing her role as a champion for education and mentorship in the field.
A Legacy of Education and Ethics
Betsy’s dedication to advancing public relations education was unwavering. She tirelessly advocated for integrating PR into academic programs and mentored aspiring professionals throughout her 63-year career. Her commitment to ethical leadership remains a cornerstone of her legacy, carried on through initiatives like the Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations.
As PRSA Greater Cleveland members, let us honor her legacy by embracing the values she championed—integrity, education, and perseverance. Betsy Plank’s story is a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of dedication and leadership in shaping our field for the better.
